A thousand-year-old history

The Meuse valley and its sources attracted inhabitants very early on. An occupation is attested from the Second Iron Age, then a Gallo-Roman villa appears in the I^er and II^e centuries. The “Villa of Setinus” could be the origin of the name Stenay.

Residence of the Merovingian king Dagobert II to the VII^e century, the city then became a strategic place. A bastioned citadel was built from 1609 to 1632 before the siege of 1654 and the annexation to France. The fortifications have disappeared, but the medieval layout and several military buildings remain legible in the city.

The city along the water

Stenay marina on the Meuse canal — The marina, between the city center and the Meuse.

The Marais district, the quays, the marina and the harbor master's office recall Stenay's constant relationship with the water. The walks run along the Meuse canal and easily reach the old center.

The tourist information office is located at harbor office, rue du Port. It welcomes residents, visitors and boaters during the tourist season.

The European Beer Museum

Installed in the old food store, the European Beer Museum traces brewing techniques, traditions and arts from the origins to the present day. It is labeled “Musée de France” and its building is listed as a Historic Monument.

The visit continues in the hop garden and the tavern. The museum is also a lively place for conferences, workshops, exhibitions and gourmet events.

Also worth seeing in town: the Saint-Grégoire church, the arcades of the Place de la République, the Minimes convent, the Sacré-Cœur chapel, the municipal archives and the L'Autre Cité cinema-theater.
